Holden Philosophy/History
Holden has a special place in history as the manufacturer of the first all-Australian motor car in 1948, the Holden FX 48-215.The name Holden was chosen in honour of Sir Edward Wheewall Holden who died the previous year and was the company’s first chairman and grandson of James Alexander Holden who started the dynasty when he founded J A Holden & Company in 1857 in Adelaide.
Holding to tradition, over the years Holden has grown with passion and commitment to providing quality products of outstanding value not just to the Australasian markets but in some form to over 60 markets worldwide.
Holden’s started appearing on New Zealand roads with the release of the FJ Holden late in 1954. Although there were some privately imported FX’s it was the FJ that truly launched Holden on our shores.
Holden’s reputation for innovation and leadership in automotive safety development is well earned. Top priority is given to all aspects of safety engineering, and the goals of occupant protection and optimum driving safety apply to the development of all Holden vehicles (Holden Facts, May 2003).
Endless crash research, laboratory hours and road miles are performed in the development of road handling and safety technology specifically suited to the real-world driving environment. Monash University Accident Research Centre plays a pivotal role in Holden safety development programs.
Iconic to Holden is the Commodore range launched in New Zealand in August 1979. Since then Commodore has been placed in the top three best-selling car models for every complete year except two as well as receiving numerous car of the year awards. Click here to view images of the Holden Commodore.
